PHILLIP & RITA BYRON

Rita's ties to Carnarvon run deep, stemming from a long line of growers that includes her grandfather, one of the region's pioneers.

With a mix of Italian and Macedonian heritage, Rita's upbringing was steeped in the rich tapestry of cultural diversity that defines Carnarvon.

Little did Rita know, a football game would one day determine the fate of the rest of her life.

“It can be expensive as a grower. But we love the lifestyle, and it’s a rewarding industry. We’re all in it together here at Sweeter”

An avid young football player originating from Perth, Phillip travelled to the small coastal town of Carnarvon to play a game that would win him more than a trophy, indeed, the heart of a young lady.

“I came to town in 1986 to play against the local team and take home the title, I didn’t realise I’d be taking home a wife” Phillip chuckles to himself.

Swept off her feet by the strapping young football enthusiast, the pair moved to Perth shortly after meeting. They tied the knot and welcomed children into their lives before deciding to move back to Rita’s roots in 2004 to raise them.

“We wanted the kids to grow up with the great lifestyle Carnarvon offers. I loved growing up here and I wanted the same for them” Rita reminisces

Upon their return, Rita and Phillip seized the opportunity to invest in their future by purchasing a plantation. With a passion for agriculture running through their veins, the couple delved into the world of banana farming, a trade deeply ingrained in the region's history.

Their journey wasn't without its challenges. Phillip reflects on their beginnings, "We started out with me working in mining and Rita going back to nursing to make ends meet, but our hearts were always in farming."

Determined to make their mark in the industry, they persevered, eventually finding their niche in bananas.

“It can be expensive as a grower. But we love the lifestyle, and it’s a rewarding industry. We’re all in it together here at Sweeter”

Today, Rita and Phillip both dedicate their time and energy to the success of their plantation. Phillip highlights the importance of community support, stating,

"We're fortunate to be part of a cooperative with dedicated members and a strong brand. It makes the workload more manageable and the rewards all the sweeter."
